How can I contact other Youth Leadership groups in my region?

Talk with your group’s Project Coach to discuss ways you can network with other Youth Leadership groups in your region.

My parents and I can’t get to the post office often - how else can I get letters to my mentor?

Talk with your Friendship Volunteer about this; your volunteer and/or your Regional Coordinator may be able to help you.

If I move or transfer schools - what do I need to do to stay on the Friendship program?

If you move schools or communities IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that you contact your Friendship Volunteer and your Regional Coordinator to discuss your move. They will give you guidance on how to stay connected to the program.

Can I continue on the Friendship program after I graduate from high school?

If you plan to go on to college, vocational, or trade school after graduation, and both you and your mentor wish to continue your mentorship, then you may continue in the Friendship program in our Post-Secondary group.

Does Futures for Children have scholarships?

No. Futures for Children is not a foundation or scholarship program. Please visit our resource tabs to see a list of scholarship opportunities open to Native American students. One program for which we do provide financial assistance to students is College Horizons (high school students in 10th and 11th grade).

What can I do if my mentor hasn’t been writing to me?

Contact your Friendship Volunteer or Regional Coordinator to let them know. They will be able to look into the situation.

What can I ask for from my mentor?

You are encouraged to ask your mentor to share about his/her life and experiences; ask for ideas, guidance, and suggestions. You may NOT ask for gifts or money from your mentor.

I lost my mentor’s address - how can I get a copy of the address again?

Contact your Friendship Volunteer or your Regional Coordinator. They can provide you with your mentor’s address.

Can my mentor and I call each other to communicate? Can you give me their number?

Mentors and students are encouraged to communicate by regular mail, first. However, phone calls can be used to add to your communication with your mentor. Please contact your volunteer or your Regional Coordinator if you would like to request your mentor’s phone number.

Why do I have to do a Student Update in the Fall semester?

FFC requires you to complete a new Student Update in their Fall sememster so that we can verify your most current contact information and monitor your success in meeting program requirements.

Will I ever get to meet my mentor?

If your mentor and your family are interested in meeting, it is possible. However, it is not required, and we encourage both sides to wait until everyone is comfortable before arranging a meeting.

What happens if I do not follow the Friendship Program requirements?

Your volunteer and/or Regional Coordinator will talk with you about the program requirements and encourage you to meet them. If you do not meet the requirements over two or more semesters, you may be taken off of the program.

What should I write to my mentor about?

Your family, your friends, your goals, school, sports, clubs, pets, books, movies, anything! What matters is that you share with them. You are also encouraged to ask your mentor(s) questions. For more suggestions about what to write, refer to your Student Handbook.

I don’t see my community on the list of current Friendship sites, can I still get on the program?

Unfortunately, if your community is not on the list of current Friendship sites, unfortunately you will not have the option to participate in the program.

Can I be paired with a mentor from a specific place?

Futures for Children cannot guarantee that a student will be paired with a mentor from a specific place.

How do I apply for the Friendship Program?

If the Friendship program is offered in your school or community and you would like to apply to the program, contact the Friendship Volunteer for your community.

By having a mentor through the Friendship program, you have another advocate and resource for helping you to reach your educational goals, including college.

Encouragement to succeed in your educational and extracurricular pursuits, increased self-confidence, opportunities to learn about other cultures, and new friendships.
