Involved Parents Reach Goals in Families in Action Program
Students Benefit From Parent Involvement
The Families in Action Program is designed to inspire parents and guardians to create a positive and encouraging home environment that promotes academic success and healthy relationships. Families in Action motivates parents to identify obstacles, and then build resources and devise solutions that support their children’s educational achievements. Two Families in Action sites were dedicated to realizing this goal during the 2011-2012 school year.
The Wingate FACE group planned several events to enrich their children's lives. The main event was a Health Fair during which Navajo professionals presented programs on fitness and healthy eating. Another well-received event was the Native Culture Celebration where participants learned to grind corn and fashion corn husk dolls. Attendees also enjoyed stories and short plays about the importance of the coyote in Native culture.
The Window Rock Elementary Parent Center organized a community event called Project Peace Train which addressed youth-related issues such as violence, bullying, suicide, gangs, and substance abuse. Notable Native entertainers and professionals presented programs advising students of ways in which to deal with adverse social issues with knowledge and self-confidence.
